Pride Events for Wednesday

Wednesday, April 23

VAV Denim Day
11:00 - 2:00, West Mall

Join Voices Against Violence (VAV) and Safe Place for Denim Day on April 23, 2014. We will be passing out FREE stickers and t-shirts on the West Mall from 11am-2pm!

Why Denim?

Denim Day calls out victim-blaming and builds a visible community dedicated to building a campus free from sexual violence. In 1998, a teenage girl in Italy was raped by her driving instructor. The man was convicted, but his case went to the Supreme Court of Appeals in Rome. The court overturned the conviction, arguing that because the girl wore very tight jeans she must have had to help remove them, thereby giving consent to have sex.

The case made international headlines, and the young woman’s jeans became a symbol of awareness that what someone wears is NEVER an excuse or invitation for rape

PRIDE Week: Day 2

A huge thank you to everyone who participated in yesterday's Kickoff Event! It was a big success and a ton of fun!

Here are the Pride events you can look forward to today:

Tuesday, April 22

StandOut Meeting

TSH Secularism and Queerness
7:00, Parlin 301

The SOCial
8:00 - 10:00, SAC Ballroom

GBSA Panel on Online Privacy
6:30, SAC Auditorium

The reality of maintaining privacy online differs from expectations and can be in tension with the publicity goals that people seek to accomplish using online platforms.  Privacy & Publicity panelists will discuss how young professionals and future business leaders can navigate the privacy and publicity implications of social and digital technologies.  Anecdotal and empirical experience will be presented that illustrates how new technologies impact LGBTQA, religious, and other communities—and the businesses that advertise to them—in significant and unexpected ways.  By understanding these effects, we can leverage them in order to create a business advantage and accomplish a social good.

DLP & Texas Together
6:00 -7:00, UTC 3.110

Texas Together is co-hosting a speaker panel on how queerness, sexuality, and gender are viewed on campus with UT’s own Delta Lambda Phi – Beta Rho Chapter fraternity. The panel will feature both UT faculty, including the GSC’s own Shane Whalley, and students.

Condom Couture 2014

Condom Couture is a fashion show that aims to recognize and provoke thought about gender inequity, global health, and HIV/AIDS. This fashion show entices student participation by challenging designers to create outfits out of condoms. Condom Couture is provocative and innovative and will engage students and members of the Austin community in the fight against AIDS.
For more information or to design your own couture outfit, visit the facebook page or email at:
Keep an eye out for QSA's design! It'll be strutting down the runway on our very own Vice Director, Qyle Jerro!

Next Meeting Wednesday

Hey y'all! Join us for our second meeting of the semester this Wednesday at 6:00 in Waggener (WAG) room 420.

Intersectionality: the intersections between different disenfranchised groups, and the interactions between multiple systems of oppression.

Thanks for coming out to the Town Hall a few weeks ago! Now, we're going to talk more in detail about two of the topics that were called out for: diversity training (of faculty and students) and an app that provides a tool against discrimination. We want to hear your thoughts about those topics, any resources you'd want to add, and how you'd like to get involved in making these things happen at UT. Let's work together to not only fight against discrimination, but also create educational tools and resources for our communities on campus!

Join us for meeting new friends, a discourse about what we can do with our collective power, and free pizza!

Welcome back, y'all!

Welcome back, everyone! We hope you've all had a pleasant winter break and a great first week back! QSA has definitely been busy planning out an AWESOME semester for us, complete with monthly discussions, fun socials, a spring potluck and, of course, Pride Week!!

The first meeting of the semester will be Wednesday, February 6th, in CLA 0.130 at 6:00pm (these dates and places are subject to change, we will keep you updated so keep an eye out for the facebook event). We'll fill you in on everything that's coming up, as well as introduce you to our new officers! We can't wait to see y'all there

Speaking of officers, QSA is still in need of a secretary. If you're interested in getting more involved with QSA, student government, or UT then this is a great opportunity for that! To apply, just click the link below. If you have any questions about the position or about QSA in general, feel free to email us at texasqsa@gmail.com!
